AdSense don't disclose which niches have the best Click Through Ratio (CTR). If you have a new website, you probably don't get more than 10 visitors a day which equates to 30 per month. Even if your CTR is 10%, you have had 3 clicks and unless you're in a very high value niche, you have just earned around $0.30. The average CTR is probably between 0.5 and 2%, if you're lucky, so look at this way, you didn't earn anything like $0.30 cents in the month.  So increasing the traffic to your site is a must for making money with Adsense.

Getting good traffic for the site/blog is not easy but it is not impossible. First requirement is good and fresh contents.  You should attract readers to your site.  Give something helpful to them in each post.  Your personal experiences or stories (if you are not a celebrity) will not make any interest in readers. Give something that is useful for them. Then you will get a lot of readers/viewers.  Pictures and videos will attract more visitors. Then create good links to your site.  Participate in forum discussions and writing in different article magazines will help you to get decent links.  Do not purchase links that has no value.

Before writing each article, find out if the topic is related to your niche or not.  Understand the taste of your audience and give them what they want.  Do Keyword Research for each article and find a high traffic keyword with low competition. 

Other important factor is the placement of the ads in the sites.  For this refer Google’s heat map and that will give you necessary guidance. Placement of the ads, colour of the text, links etc. are important in getting more clicks.  Some tips for this are:

•  Ads at the top of the page and on the left of the page perform better than any other ads.
•  Ads without background colour and borders perform better than ads within borders with background colour.
•  Ads within content pages perform better than any other ads. A search box on every page gives you another chance for earning Adsense income.
• Your link at the top of the ad should be blue like a normal link, the ad should be black, and the URL should also be black so that it blends in with the ad copy. That makes the link stand out and gives you a better chance of someone clicking on it.

Google has some strict terms of service (TOS) and you have to follow it very carefully. If you are not careful, you will find that your Adsense Account is banned and it is practically impossible to get your account back.  Read Google’s TOS first, and then only applies for Adsense and throughout your association with Google; you have to observe their guidelines strictly.
